An Environmentally Friendly Printing Technology For Print Rollers
Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at 08:12PM I recently came across an article on a printing technology for coating printing rollers that would greatly benefit our environment. The innovative method is expected to lessen the application of chemicals, water, and the additional use of energy during the manufacture of print rollers.
The manufacturers are utilizing a coating system that applies what they call a “Cold Spray” on the print rollers that they produce. This method would then be able to decrease, if not eliminate, the effects of applying spray coatings at high temperatures. Instead of the usual side effects such as oxidation and melting, the innovative method introduced to the coating of the print rollers allows for the use of a much lower temperature, thereby reducing the said side effects. None of the thermal spray techniques would be used on the new coated print rollers.
The novel method of “Cold Spray” utilizes much lower temperatures that lets both metallic and non-metallic powders, as well as a mixture of the two, be sprayed onto the surfaces of the print rollers using supersonic speed.
The new technology is a welcome innovation that would benefit both the manufacturers of print rollers, and at the same time Mother Nature. By replacing the electroplating techniques used at present, the manufacturers of the print rollers using the Cold Spray technology would be able to save millions of dollars in their operating expenses.
In addition, the Cold Spray technology would get rid of the chemicals during the process, as well as save a huge amount of energy and water.
Let’s hope that the new technology would be successful and that the environment would truly benefit from this innovation.
